The student in graduation robes (purple and gold are the San Francisco State colors) waves his degree toward Alcatraz, whose territory was occupied by Native Americans from November 20, 1969, to June 11, 1971. The figure may also represent the San Francisco State College faculty and student strike, which lasted from November 6, 1968 until March 21, 1969. making it "the longest strike by students at an academic institution in the United States."
