Fascinating that a church would change its location because the surrounding area had become “too commercial.”
But the parishoners clearly loved their building, because, in 1902, they dismantled the old building, moved over a million bricks, the pews, and much of the metal and woodwork to the new location.
It was a fortuitous move, since the structure would very probably have been destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. During the months following that devastation, Calvary Presbyterian took several other churches and civic functions into its walls:
“St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Old First Presbyterian Church and Temple Emanuel all held their services in the new building after the quake and a temporary courtroom was constructed in the basement for use by the Superior Court.” (Wikipedia)
