Like many of the classic German city halls, the Gernsbach rathaus began its life as a private residence. Built in 1617-1618 for the timber merchant and lumber shipping magnate Johann Kast, the residence was acquired by the city in the eighteenth century. Since 1936, the departments of city government have since moved to other buildings.
