Joseph Strauss, the designer of the original concept for the Golden Gate Bridge (shown on the main Visionary San Francisco page), thought that perhaps an evocation of the Parisian Arc de Triomphe would look imposing, and perhaps impart a little French éclat to the forest of girders:

 

Increased traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge has prompted some visionaries to propose double decking the structure:
