Known locally by its nickname, "The Violet," the current city hall stands where several of its predecessors had been built and destroyed.

"La Violette is already mentioned in 1294. Located near the Market Square, adjoining the hall butchers, it was the place of the election of mayors and the publication of municipal regulations. It was rebuilt in the early fifteenth century and destroyed in 1468 during the sack of Liège by Charles the Bold; rebuilt in 1480, it was again destroyed in June 1691 during the bombing of the city by Marshal Marquis de Boufflers. It is in 1714 that the current City Hall was built." -- Wikipedia
